Lean Project Summary
*
Cost effective innovative solution for installing Surge Protection Devices (SPD) Units in Columns and feeder pillars. Initial installation method would be a time consuming exercise requiring the entire circuit to be tested to BS7671 prior to the works and post installation with the need to remove the existing cut out and install a new cut out. Through value stream mapping identified area to focus improvement and worked with Tofco and Mersen, to find a SPD unit that can be installed concurrently with the new lantern tails in about five minutes.
Lean Project Benefits Summary
*
Saving Time and Resource and eliminated the need for BS7671 testing, as we are not interfering with the existing circuit.

Define
*
SPD (Surge Protection Device) units in The road map stated that SPD units were required in all columns and this was then extended to all feeder pillars, although no direction was given as to if the units should be wired in parallel or in series. The simple solution that was initially accepted was to replace the whole existing cutout with a new cut out that had a SPD incorporated within the cut out. It was noted that the installation would be a time consuming exercise as in addition to requiring the entire circuit to be tested to BS7671 prior to the works and post installation there was the need to remove the existing cut out and install a new cut out.
Measure
*
It worked out that under the current process we would only achieve 10 a night with 1x electrician.
Analyse
*
Working with Tofco and Mersen, we found a SPD unit that can be installed concurrently with the new lantern tails in about five minutes.
Improve
*
We had extended tails added for greater installation flexibility within the columns, and the unit is fixed to the backboard with a standard wood screw. The unit costs 50% less than the new cut-out option, and the installation time is much quicker. Additionally, it eliminates the need for BS7671 testing, as we are not interfering with the existing circuit, saving time and TM since testing must be completed before work starts.
Control
*
By using the new SPD unit from Tofco and Mersen, the installation process can be improved significantly. This alternative solution is more efficient, cost-effective, and does not disrupt the existing circuit, saving time and resources.
Transfer
*
We have shared detail what we have done with other contractors in different regions, who are now considering adopting this new approach.
