Lean Project Summary
*
On the A1 Birtley to Coalhouse Project, we have two site compounds, located at Allerdene and Eighton Lodge. Both sites have been running on diesel generators since the start of the mobilisation. Subsequently, the project switched to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as it was considered to be more sustainable and give rise to less emissions. However, the cost of HVO started to increase across time and the emissions are observed to be comparable to white diesel when comparing well to wheel. This suggested that it has a negative impact to carbon reduction objective that was set out initially to achieve.
Lean Project Benefits Summary
*
Total cost saving on HVO= £1,028,752.51 Total expenditure on LPG= -£468,479.06 Overall Savings= £560,273.46 Carbon reduction =556 TonnesCO2e

Measure
*
HVO costs= £1.74 per L HVO emissions= 2.51 kgCO2/L In addition, HVO prone to spillages when refuelling, causing contaminations to the surrounding
Analyse
*
Dec 2023 to Nov 2024 (Running costs and emissions till the end of the project) Total CO2 emissions= 2.51kgCO2/L x 584513L = 1467 tonnes CO2e If we stayed on HVO, the total expenditure for HVO is £1,028,752.51
Improve
*
Dec 2023 to Nov 2024 (Running costs and emissions till the end of the project) If we swapped to LPG, the total CO2 emissions= 1.56 kgCO2/L x 584513L = 911 kgCO2 The total expenditure on LPG is £468,479.06 which is significantly less than HVO
Control
*
Adlingtons, the supplier, proposed and offered an innovative way to power the site compound by using Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) tanks. By using LPG to power the site compound, emissions would be reduced compared to using HVO. The LPG tanks would be resized to suit the compound and be sited with suitably sized generators. This would offer a reduced noise output and eliminate spillages and ground contamination whilst refuelling the tanks.
Transfer
*
To be passed onto mobilisation team to consider when setting up new projects. If a compound cannot be connected to mains electricity and use a green tariff, then consider alternative fuels which give rise to less greenhouse gas emissions. I.e. LPG or hydrogen.
