Define
*
A retrofit programme has been developed to create additional Emergency Areas (EAs) on sections of ALR motorway across the country giving drivers added reassurance and confidence in the safety of the Network. 150 additional EAs are being added to ALR motorways by the SMP Alliance. There is opportunity to understand the construction process, variants and lessons learnt from previously built EAs. The sheetpiling activity is one that will be repeated on a number of EA's and suitable for a Lean study
Measure
*
For the first week of activity on Emergency Area EA02 on DHS M6 J4-5 we carried out a series of direct work observations during the Sheet piling works. We worked with the piling contractor Van Elle to look for opportunities for improvement. Daily records were maintained of production and of resource that was used.
Analyse
*
We analysed the sheet piling records from week 1. It was observed that the second excavator was not being utilised. We identified a risk that time would be lost through transport and motion by changing equipment from the pre auger to the vibrating hammer. We forecast it was going to take 14.9 days to complete the activity based on the current progress. An intervention was required to mitigate the programme.
Improve
*
Our Engineer discussed the proposed method of works for pre auguring and sheet piling using a single excavator with Van Elle and suggested an alternative method to make use of the second excavator and thus reduce change over time. Support was gained from the Senior Agent
Control
*
The pre auguring, vibrating and pile hammering activity was monitored and recorded through week 2 to verify the improved production that could be achieved using 2 excavators thereby reducing the changeover time of piling attachments on the excavators.
Transfer
*
The A3 report was generated. A PowerPoint Presentation was prepared for sharing to a wider forum. National Highways Efficiency Register ID 1587
