Visual Performance Management(VPM)
National Highways Lean Visual Performance Management Standard
Visual Performance Management is the connection between people, project and data. It is where information is provided in a simple format that is easy to understand and available at the workplace. It enables teams to view their performance and provides information on where they can improve.
Visual Performance Management is a system that uses visual displays along with discussion in stand-up meetings to highlights problems ‘at a glance’. This drives actions which, together with continuous improvement, helps us to achieve set targets
By enabling teams to view their performance, teams are informed and can coordinate work activities to meet objectives with clarity on what needs to be focused on, prioritised and actioned.
Key steps:
• Regularly review performance visuals to measure and monitor performance to identify problems early.
• Communicate updates of key progress, where activities have been completed ahead of schedule, capturing and sharing lessons learnt.
• Prevent future errors by understanding the root cause, where activities have been completed late / non-completion, using Lean methods and tools to develop improvement actions.
• Apply durations to each activity with no contingency or float
• Decide which activities require a buffer (the most fragile/risky)
Top tips for successful Visual Performance Management:
• Information must be accessible to all team members & senior leadership.
• Hold regular focused stand-up-meetings to review performance.
• KPIs and Productivity measures and targets are shown in the visuals
• Information is timely and up to date, providing value to the team
• 3Cs boards (Concern, Cause & Countermeasure) to track mitigation actions.
• Actions, owners and target dates are captured during meetings.
• Use consistency to visualise progress (RAG (Red, Amber, Green) / Shapes)
